Defying Slimming World

I know I like to rebel, but little did I realise I'd be rebelling against Slimming World, the organisation that have felt like a friend for most of my adult life. I would drift back time and again as the plan worked for me.

I'd follow good old Green days and the weight would shift. The only reason the weight didn't stay off was due to my falling off plan and eating my body weight in crap food, it wasn't down to the Green plan. Well, now, apparently, Green doesn't work, people don't lose weight on it......

....I beg to differ here!

I'm sure I'm not the only Green day devotee out there who feels snubbed by this move. Extra Easy may be an easy plan to follow, but for me, it offers no good reason to ditch my extra Healthy Extra choices, especially the cheesey HeB choices that are only offered on a Green day...a life without Stilton? Not for me. There is a good reason that cheese is offered as a Healthy Extra, it is a source of protein, maybe one with fat content too, but that is why it's a measured amount, something that isn't offered on Extra Easy, so I'm losing a source of protein on my vegetarian diet by switching to EE.

Of course, I could use my syns on that cheese, and on an additional A choice, so I'd be left with just 8 syns to play with, or 3 when I drop down to the standard 15 syns. Could you easily stick to plan with 8 syns a day? Or 3? Didn't think so.  Of course, I could always choose between tea and coffee and a portion of cheese a day, and have cereal, OR cereal bars OR bread. Thing is, when I have tried to do that in the past, I've become grumpy and miserable, having to choose between coffee or a treat in the evening, having to cut out my sweet treat of an Alpen light or Hi-Fi bar makes me feel like I'm on a diet, makes me feel restricted and makes me fall off plan. Wasn't the whole ethos behind Slimming World that you can make the plan work for you? For me the three plans of Red, Green and Extra Easy were probably the best portfolio of plans Slimming World have ever had, and believe me, I've seen a few. I was there when it was just Red and Green, and when they introduced Mix to Max (remember that??) and of course the huge success that is Extra Easy.

If you're a red day devotee, you'll be okay, just go with the new Extra Easy SP plan, half a plate of veg and half a plate of protein. Jobs a good'un. It's the plan that has replaced Success Express, and for me, makes it practically unusable. It would mean a week of meals that are half veg and half beans/pulses/plain quorn chunks/mince. So much for no food is banned eh Slimming World?

I shall stop ranting now, I'm sure you can all appreciate that I'm upset and frustrated at what I see as pointless changes. It's all very well saying I can still follow Green, well yes I can. For now. Already there is a new syns online on the website, showing only EE syns, how much longer before all support for the Red and Green plans are quietly dropped and it's a case of EE or nothing? Even now I'm questioning whether it's worth me going to group anymore as I was told the Green plan will not be talked about, so why am I paying that money?

For now it's time to try defying Slimming World, I think I'll try defying Slimming World....

This girl is green, through and bloody through - and I now have an even bigger bit between my teeth to prove Slimming World wrong, to show you can  bloody well lose on Green. Just watch me fly ;o)

Oh, and here's the food I've been eating over the last few days...as that's sort of why you're all here right? ;o)

Hopefully I've not upset too many of you with my rantings, but I feel justified in feeling angry and upset. Why fix what isn't broke, why upset the multitudes of vegetarians who stick to the Green plan. Oh, and don't patronise us by wheeling out a vegetarian consultant who thinks that courgette strips can replace pasta and roasted butternut squash is the same as roasted spuds.

  1. Well said. I am looking forward to getting mine next week.

  2. WHAT!!!I hadn't heard about the changes yet and was going back next week to get my new book. Our consultant has left and there has been no group for 5 weeks (long story but its pissed a lot of people off!) I was only going back to get the book as I;m at target, well I was but sure as hell wont be when I get back on the scales :/ but that sounds bloody stupid, I've done the occasional Red or EE day but pretty much got through on 8 years of Green and there is NO way I could have stuck at it otherwise, so I agree, rant away!!

  3. Karen I think your concerns are more than justified. I think you should express this to SlimmingWorld head office

  4. You can continue just doing EE, and not EE-SP. Weightloss might not be as good though , as what SW says the trails of SP has produced.

  5. I've just got the new pack. I can't follow the new plan at all. I would manage it for about a day.and then fall off the wagon and stuff my face. To me you need cards, it's not a new plan it's basically eating only meat, fish, fruit and veg. I'm sure if I offer spaghetti bol without spaghetti it will not go down well at the table! I am not impressed sw

  6. I'm sticking with red and green days! If it ain't broke don't fix it!

  7. I've just got mine and as a life member who has followed the plan for years I'm feeling pushed out by Slimming World too. It is pretty impractical for vegetarians, One third of my plate speed food and two thirds protein -yikes! I'm more likely to be two thirds veggie and one third protein!

  8. I feel the same way... I just joined SW online again the other day - not knowing about the changes! and they don't make you aware of it before signing up. I'm vegetarian and there is no hope in h*ll I could get by with only 2 HE and next to no carbs. Its a joke. I liked to join online because of the Food Dairy, but you can only use that when you're on EE, so the online membership is now completely useless for me. A lot of money down the drain! Thank God I only signed up for 3 months... They should really give you the chance to pull out after realising the new system is absolutely useless for you...

  9. I'm new to SW, joined a few months ago, but I've had really good losses on extra easy so far following a mainly vegetarian diet (other half is vegetarian so I don't eat meat at home). I don't have a problem doing SP days either. Fruit for breakfast, butternut squash soup for lunch, salad with hex A cheese, first hex b walnuts and second hex b dried cranberries. Scrambled egg with spinach, tomato and mushrooms for breakfast, salad with quorn pieces for lunch, roast vegetables with lentils and cottage cheese for dinner, still have my hex a and both hex b choices for snacks. Beans, mushrooms and 2 toast (first hex b) for breakfast, frittata with peppers, courgette and mushrooms for lunch, vegetable curry (butternut squash, chickpeas, carrot, mushrooms) or veggie chilli sin carne with cauliflower 'rice' for dinner - still have one hex b choice and my hex a choice to play with. Maybe it's a case of ignorance being bliss since I never knew the old system, but I'm very happy with both the food I'm eating and the weight loss I'm having.

  10. I'm really peed off. Joined online thinking I could do green as I did at a group last year (successfully) and it's not there! The online diary doesn't let me add and extra hex a and hex b so it feels like I'm already, one hour in, being dishonest in my diary. I don't want fruit for brekkie, I want my mini weetabix. And I'd quite like my mini babybels AND a brew with milk, thanks. Feel like I just wasted my money! Like some of the other posters, I am veggie but deffo need more than 2 slices of teeny tiny bread for hex.

  11. My feelings exactly, much as I love my Consultant, she now only promotes EE, it's making me wonder if it's worth it to pay to go to a group that won't support the plan I follow.
It's terrible isn't it? I shall not be forced to choose between cheese and milk, it's ridiculous, and I don't know how the hell people on EE do it! x

  12. Follow the plan you know it... or simply adapt to the new approach. Can't see what everyone is whining about, it's not particularly difficult or restrictive. Easy enough to follow EE with a vegetarian approach... bread and cereal intake is reduced, yes, but you can eat potatoes, rice and pasta. I'm 6 weeks in and 10lbs down, enjoying it too.

  13. If you have the old books and used red and green days, just continue with it. It's still going to work. I just joined again after several years gap. It's a bit confusing as I also was a fan of the old version but will go it a go.

If it's too difficult to follow, I shall go back to the old way.

  14. Hey there. I'm a total veggie and joined slimming world November 14
I was 11 stone 5 and half now 10.10...it's takeen ages to loose. Just wanted an opinion... Do you think green plan old would work better for me. I started when it was the new one so they didn't really talk green and now I have asked they said they won't help on green
Do you think weight loss is slower when your not got much to loose?

    1. My weight loss did slow down when I had less to lose, but I struggled to lose on EE as well, my Consultant would always recommend I try it instead of Green, but it never really worked for me. I know SW is big on not weighing or measuring, but sometimes just keeping an eye on your portion size can help. I hope you manage to to get to where you want to be .

  16. I lost 2 and a half stone on red and green, maintained that loss for 4 years, still go to group most weeks as a target member. I didn't need to check syns as after four years they were imprinted in my head and on my eyeballs. EE was introduced and I thought, OK, something different, I'll have the new pack given out by my consultant and try it. Wrong move - I put on 8 lbs, felt betrayed by being unable to have to HEA a day - I too am a cheese lover, and confused by the fact that I could have a whole chicken and 2lbs of pasta on the same plate if I so desired. I went back to red and green, and shifted 6 of the 8lbs in two weeks.

  17. Another one who thinks the new changes suck! Seems more restrictive and more complicated now. I'm sticking to the old way, and if I'm doing a Green or Original day then I shall enjoy cheese and milk, cereal and sandwiches. I'm not going to try and measure half a plate of protein and half a plate of speed food, that's measuring isn't it, and against the SW ethos I thought! Similarly I refuse to dip into my precious syn allowance for anything other than treats! It's a pity they didn't add EE sp as an extra and continued to promote and support the Green and Red plans. The first thing I thought when I learned about these changes was " what about veggies and vegans"? It seems to me that they are going to lose out on this! A big step backwards SW!

  18. I lost weight with old red and green days but iv lost the old books regarding breast feeding and pregnancy and I am currently both whilst trying to eat healthy.anyone know how many extra a ans bs I can have above my usual 2of each??

  19. Well ... I've just re joined Slimming world after a 2 year break, it's the only plan that doesn't make me feel like I'm on a diet.

I used to use my healthy extras for breakfast and lunch leaving my syns for the evening meal but now I can only have one of each it only covers one meal meaning I have to have free food only for lunch or split the syns over lunch and tea meaning neither meal feels particularly satisfying :(

  20. I totally agree with your rants X
I rejoined a couple of months ago, not realising that the magazine and books have completely deleted all knowledge of red/green! X
I'm a green follower and could just get on with it but I don't have none of the old stuff

  21. totally agree, if it did not work are they going to refund all the money they took when they were promoting it. I lost weight on both red and green and I hate EE

  22. I am so glad its not just me doing the ranting, I followed red and green plans a couple of years back and had excellent losses especially at the beginning of starting a plan, I joined a few weeks ago on the new plan lost only 2lbs in my first week and just could not get into it ....so going solo with red and green

  23. I returned to SW yesterday after a few years away and am devastated to find out there's no red and green days. I'm not vegetarian but I used to love green days and have the occasional red. It really worked for me and I lost 6.5 stone. I hate not having a choice and am feeling so restricted on this awful EE plan. I had my HEb choice (Weetabix) first thing this morning for breakfast including my HEa choice (milk) so now for the rest of the day I can't have any cheese, bread or Hi-Fis unless I count them as Syns. I think I'm going to find this plan really boring. Gutted! Why ever couldn't they keep the three plans for us to choose from.

  24. This is by far the most inspirational post I have seen in a long time. The diet and fitness industry has a look to answer for. I have tied following the new plans and blamed myself for not succeeding, which in turn can impact your self esteem. As you quite rightly put it - could anyone so extra easy on 3 syns?

Great article - well put. My only challenge is that I no longer have my old books - is there somewhere I can get a list of HE extras and also a green food diary?

  25. I too have re-joined and have no intention of following the ee plan. I will be doing a mixture of red and green and keeping quiet but get the weekly support from image therapy although you feel like a naughty girl for following a different plan. they should have kept them all and let people choose after all we are grown adults not babies!

  26. This is helpful! I was about to rejoin after a few year's absence but as a vegan I don't think I'll bother now. I'm gutted I gave away my green guide. SW have made a big mistake IMO

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've also just rejoined and think the new ee is just rubbish.I lost 7 stone using green days before and lost a stone in my first 4 weeks. This time I've been going 3 weeks and lost 2lbs! It just seems to go against everything I knew about the old sw way. I'm going to try green days this week and see what happens! But shh don't tell anyone! X

  28. I too have rejoined S.w. after a gap of some years, when I did really well using red and green days. I have rejoined online, only to find the red and green plans phased out, and I don't like the extra easy plan. I am very disappointed, and also feel I have wasted three months membership as I will not be supported for the red and green schemes. S.w. Should make this quite clear before you spend your money. I would not have bothered if I had known. I have just carried on on my own with red and green, and lost almost 4lb in ten days - proof that r. & g. work - and I have enjoyed all the things I want to eat with carefull planning, including my beloved pasta, cheese, and potato. But I find the only thing accessible online which is any use to me, is the Syn checker. Very disappointed. But I wish you all Goood Luck with your weight loss.

  29. I'm so glad I've read this. I thought it was just me. I joined in January and I've lost around 2lb. Last time I did green days, I had lost one stone by now. Unfortunately I've thrown the old books away!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I totally agree. I didn't attend a group but did 'reds and greens ' online and loved it. I re joined 18 months later to find they had changed it to the new system. Result? Sixty quid down the drain,no weight loss just a lost customer who formerly swore by SW.

  31. Well I love the extra easy sp. I'm a 33 year old man who was 14 stone 4.

8 weeks in and I'm now 12 stone 10. Not sure if it's better for men as I love meat and veg so I'm always eating fish/veg chicken/veg etc. Or I'm always eating boiled rice and a slimming world meal like the chilli or the saag.

BUT this is my first time on slimming world and have never known the red/green days so I guess it's just what you know.

Anyway, great blog. Thanks for the read :)

  32. Like many others here, I've previously had very good success with SW's green days, and after an absence of many years, rejoined online a few days ago. The new books have arrived and I'm completely lost. I don't understand how anyone could expect to lose weight mixing proteins and carbs in the quantities shown, and I'm angry and disappointed about the weighing & measuring now required. I'm not sure how any of it can be called 'Food Optimising' now as there's nothing optimal about it at all.

I'm also angry that the changes were hidden until after I'd paid, I think that's a con designed to ensure that previous members aren't put off by the changes if they think about rejoining. Glad I only paid for 3 months, but that was still almost £100 that I can't afford to throw away - which is what I feel I've done.

I've just searched online, and bought a couple of second-hand SW Green recipe books!
